Foundation of German Business Scholarships (SDW)

All nationalities, including Syria, but only for residents of Germany.

Information for refugees

  • Prospective students who came to Germany as refugees can take the aptitude test free of charge and apply for a place at university.
  • The examination fees for international students (TestAS) and the examination administration by the uni-assist service center are covered by the DAAD using funds from the BMBF.
  • The procedure shows whether applicants have a chance of getting a place at university.

Acceptable specializations

  • All degree programs with exclusively full-time university degrees (Bachelor, Master, Diploma, State Examination)
  • The scholarship supports degree programs at state or recognized universities in Germany. In France, Austria, and Switzerland, study is limited to cities (Paris, Vienna, Zurich, St. Gallen) due to the scholarship's regional clusters in these cities.
  • In the Greater London area, the scholarship supports four-semester master's programs in particularly justified cases. Such justified cases exist if one of the following three requirements is met:
  • You have a British Bachelor's degree and would like to pursue a Master's degree.
  • The chosen Master's program is not offered at any university in the European Union.
  • The subject area of ​​the chosen degree program (not the university as a whole) is among the top 150 subjects worldwide.

Other scholarship benefits, if any

  • The amount of the subsidy depends on the income situation.
  • All students receive a fixed tuition fee of €300 per month, regardless of their income.
  • Depending on your income, the scholarship will amount to a maximum of €752 per month.
  • All doctoral students receive a fixed research fee of €100 per month, regardless of their income.
  • Depending on your income, the subsidy is up to 1,350 euros per month.
  • Contributions to health and, if applicable, long-term care insurance: €109/month.
  • Family allowance, if applicable: 155 euros/month.
  • Childcare allowance, if applicable: 150 euros/month.

Required documents

Foreign students

  • EU countries: Upload a copy of your passport.
  • Non-EU countries: Upload a residence permit. Proof of German language skills at least at C1 or DSH 2 level (if applicable).
  • A current certificate of enrollment from your university, which contains all information about the number of semesters and subjects.
  • If you do not have your certificate of enrollment at the start of your studies or in the case of Master's applications, you can submit it retroactively via the online portal up to three weeks before the start of the selection days.
  • A list of previous academic achievements, if the course has already begun (e.g. an extract from the university examination office).
  • Bachelor's degree: If you don't yet have your bachelor's degree, please upload it to the portal before the selection process begins. Instead of your bachelor's degree, you must upload your bachelor's transcripts.
  • Training certificates or employment references (if available).
  • Evidence of social commitment.

Written documentation of your volunteer work should provide us with the most accurate overview possible of the tasks you undertook during the respective period. The documentation should include detailed information on the duration and scope of your volunteer work, as well as the content of your activities.

Important instructions

 Please note the following when preparing your application documents:

  • The documents must be submitted in German.
  • Certificates, transcripts, and evidence of volunteer work in English are also accepted for the scholarship.
  • Documents with German or English translations must be submitted by a sworn translator.
  • Please submit certificates and proof of achievement with an explanation of the grading system (grading scale), which must be identical to the German system.

Required language test

  • Proof of German language skills at level C1 or DSH 2 (only if you did not obtain your university entrance qualification in Germany).
