Mentoring – Info About The Project

The German-Syrian Research Foundation e.V (DSFG) established its Mentoring Program in April 2021 to support students, researchers and scientists embarking on their academic journey across Europe, with a current focus on Germany.

What is the aim of the project?

The Academic Mentoring Program supports students and academics who aim to pursue higher education in Europe—especially in Germany. Its goal is to bridge the gap between aspiring students and experienced mentors who have successfully navigated the academic system.

Through one-on-one guidance, mentees receive support on study paths, scholarship opportunities, academic integration, and personal development. The program also helps participants overcome common challenges such as language barriers, bureaucratic procedures, cultural differences, and the complexities of adapting to a new academic environment.

What kind of support does the DSFG Mentoring program provide?

The program offers a wide range of academic and personal support tailored to each mentee’s goals. Mentors provide guidance in areas such as:
Application Support
Assistance with university and scholarship applications in Germany, including timelines, requirements, and strategic planning.
Help adapting to academic expectations, exploring study or research interests, and navigating higher-education systems.
Feedback on CVs, motivation letters, and other application materials to strengthen your academic profile.
Opportunities for tandem language practice to improve German or English proficiency.
Support with understanding cultural norms, navigating daily challenges, and settling into life in Germany.

How does the DSFG Mentoring Program work?

Interested academics can register as mentees by filling out the Become a Mentee form on our website. This form helps us learn about your academic background, interests, and needs.

Based on the information you provide, our team matches you with a mentor whose expertise aligns with your goals. Your mentor will accompany you throughout your university and scholarship application process, offering guidance tailored to your field and aspirations.

Why become a mentor and how to join the program?

If you have successfully navigated the academic or professional landscape in Europe – especially Germany – and want to support others on the same path, we invite you to join the DSFG Mentoring Program as a mentor. Mentoring is an opportunity to share your experience, make a tangible impact on students’ futures, and develop your own leadership and coaching skills. Interested volunteers can register by completing the Become a Mentor form on our website, where you provide brief information about your background, fields of expertise, and availability.

Once approved, you will be added to our mentor network and matched with mentees whose academic goals align with your profile.
