  • The maximum funding for a single scholarship is €10,000.
  • The Bayer Foundation Fellowship can be combined with any other funding source or scholarship.

Information about the scholarship

Other scholarship benefits, if any:

  • Provision of additional funds for stays abroad or research activities, i.e. in addition to ongoing or future scientific studies.
  • All award winners are invited to become active members of the Bayer Foundation Science Network. This includes special events for each group, i.e., events for all award winners in a given year. Additional activities for all young scientists in our network, such as career events and calls for papers, may also be offered. Furthermore, scientific contacts can be arranged. If you continue to be actively involved in the network, your membership will be renewed for life.

The Bayer Foundation Fellowship can be used for the following:

  • Mandatory coursework (e.g. master's thesis, clinical rotation, etc.) that must be completed abroad.
  • Additional (non-compulsory) research stays abroad remain possible as part of the Master's, doctoral (PhD) or medical studies.
  • Research abroad is intended to continue to teach specific scientific skills and techniques relevant to current research programs.
  • Internships between master's and doctoral studies.
  • Research/use of specialized facilities remains in place for activities that cannot be carried out at the local facility, such as specialized hospitals, use of cyclotrons, radio facilities, special microscopes, and the like.
  • Interdisciplinary research is permitted and encouraged; for example, a microbiologist can study systems biology and a synthetic chemist can study chemical biology.

Required documents

Required conditions

  • Very good to very good in a bachelor's and/or master's degree program in a natural sciences subject or in medicine. Previously, very good to very good.
  • Currently studying for a Master's, PhD, Medical or equivalent degree.
  • Two letters of recommendation from national institutes, including current and/or former line managers.
  • A letter from the host institute confirming acceptance and support of the applicant.

General eligibility

  • To be considered for the Otto Bayer Fellowship for Drug Research, applicants must currently be pursuing a Master's or PhD degree (or equivalent) in natural sciences, pharmacy, or data science.
  • To be considered for the Jeff Schell Fellowship in Agricultural Sciences, applicants must currently be pursuing a master's or PhD degree (or equivalent) in the physical sciences or data science.
  • To be considered for a Carl Duisburg Fellowship in Medical Sciences, applicants must be studying human or veterinary medicine or hold a Master's or PhD degree (or equivalent) in biomedical engineering, applied medicine, public health, or data science in medicine.
  • Students who do not reside in Germany must apply for a scholarship within Germany.
  • Students residing in Germany must complete internships abroad.
