A German-Syrian Initiative to Revive University Libraries and Build a Promising Knowledge Future
Driven by the belief that knowledge is a bridge to the future, the German-Syrian Research Foundation e.V. (DSFG) has launched a groundbreaking initiative to breathe new life into university libraries across Syria. In its first wave, the foundation has secured 400 carefully selected academic books in English and German, which opening new windows for students and researchers in fields such as humanities, literature, mathematics, and other vital disciplines.
These intellectual treasures are currently en route by sea and are expected to arrive at Syrian ports in the coming weeks. Once the shipment lands, a specialized team will begin sorting and categorizing the books to ensure each one reaches the institution where it can make the greatest impact.
The Central Library at Damascus University will be the primary recipient of this first batch, given its academic scale and growing needs. Duplicate copies will be allocated to the National Library, while efforts are underway to establish communication with additional universities to broaden the reach of this valuable collection.
The selection of books reflects a commitment to intellectual diversity, offering students and researchers access to a wide range of sources that support both academic and research projects. This variety underscores the initiative’s dedication to meeting the evolving needs of university communities across both theoretical and applied disciplines.
This step is part of a broader effort to strengthen Syria’s academic infrastructure, provide internationally aligned resources, and elevate the quality of higher education. The initiative goes beyond simply filling gaps in reference materials which aims to foster a more open learning environment, encourage critical thinking and research, and restore the library’s role as a vibrant hub of university life.
With the arrival and sorting process soon complete, a new chapter of hope and knowledge begins in Syrian universities. This shipment is more than just books, it’s a seed for a brighter academic future, empowering students and researchers alike. It’s the first step toward building a renewed reservoir of knowledge, born from the conviction that learning can transcend borders and spark meaningful change.
